The Art of the Living Room

For some people, decorating a home is a fun and exciting project. For others, it can be an overwhelming and stressful process. If you are the latter, don’t worry, our Associate Broker, Melinda McCausland, is here to help!

Melinda graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Interior Design. Below is some of her expert advice on how to design a beautiful living room in any home!

Furniture is Key

Selecting furniture and arranging it accordingly makes all the difference in a living room. If you are on a budget, I always recommend choosing a couple items to splurge on, one of those being furniture (especially a good couch)!

The furniture in your living space will likely see the most use, and we want it to be as visually appealing as it is comfortable! When it is time to arrange, make sure you decide on a single focal point. This could be a fireplace, TV, or art.

Rugs are Important

Choosing a rug or multiple rugs for your living room is about more than just finding colors and patterns that you enjoy. You should also consider size! The right sized area rug can tie an entire room together, while the wrong size can give a disjointed appearance.

Another factor I always consider when choosing a rug is texture. Texture preferences will always vary from person to person. Have small children? A soft shag could be best. Have pets? Something with a flatter/shorter weave makes it easy to vacuum away pet hair!

Splurge on Art & Framing

When I mentioned there were two things I generally encourage people to splurge on (in comparison to other home furnishings), the first being furniture, the second is art and framing. Picking art pieces that you enjoy usually comes pretty naturally, but taking the time to frame such pieces can make all the difference when it comes time to hang them!

Solid, black frames never go out of style, and I also love using gold frames to accent a living space. Whether you decide to use family portraits or the work of your favorite artist, taking the time to hand select pictures and frames will give your living room a refined and personalized space.

These are just a few key pieces of advice to consider when decorating a living room! Selecting furniture and art pieces that you love adds a personalized touch to your living area and creates a wonderful space to enjoy with family and friends.
